Hot weather safety for technicians

It’s going to be a scorching summer, and that means technicians will be in attic spaces, basements, and roofs — all susceptible to the worst heat. Here’s how to stay safe on the job:

1. Summer uniforms. Trade hot, cotton undershirts for fast-wicking or sweat-resistant athletic shirts this summer. It’s a small investment that makes a big difference.

2. Work in shifts. Are you on location with another technician? Make a game plan before you start on the attic, basement, or roof to make the most of your time. If it isn’t necessary for both of you to be on the job at the same time, work in shifts to cut down on heat exposure.

3. Keep yourself hydrated. Drinking water constantly throughout your day is crucial, but make sure to replenish your carbohydrate and electrolyte levels by also drinking sports drinks like Gatorade and Powerade. Dehydration warning signs are:

  • Thirst and dry mouth: Instead of waiting until after a job is over to drink anything, keep a water bottle or cooler on hand for all your warm weather jobs.
  • Pinch yourself: Dry skin can be a crucial indicator of dehydration. Pinch your arm and see how long it takes for the skin to return to its normal condition. If your return time is lagging, make sure to take a break and drink lots of fluids.
  • Headaches and dizziness: Stop if headaches or dizziness occur. Your customer would rather see you swap places with another technician than see an accident in their home.

What are your tips for staying safe during the summer months?
