In my years of training, I’ve learned a lot of things about what it takes to run a successful HVAC business. What happens internally is just as important as what happens out on your calls.
You need to do performance reviews. Whether you do them quarterly or annually, your employees need to know if you like their work or not. A good system to use is keep/stop/start. List the things your employee should keep doing, stop doing, and start doing. This incorporates a positive, a negative, and an action item.
Keep redefining your objectives. Have you looked at your company’s mission statement lately? If you haven’t updated it since 1996, now would be the time to do so. Your goals before the digital era would not be the same now. You should review your mission statement every year and see if you’ve been adhering. If not, either adapt your mission statement or adapt your behavior.
Train on. Employees often
leave their jobs because they get bored and aren’t learning anything new. Set aside time for each employee to take an
online training course in rounds. That way, they can continue to work while getting through the learning modules.
Keep the books. You won’t believe how many businesses don’t keep books. While the IRS doesn’t require any fancy software or profit and loss statements, it’s important for business owners to know exactly how profitable their business is. You need to know exactly how much you spend and how much you earn so you can make adjustments accordingly.
Encourage and build your employees, stay focused on your objectives, and keep accurate records and you’ll be well on your way to running a successful HVAC business.
